A tornado spared Casino Aztar in Caruthersville, Missouri on April 2nd from damages, but many of the casino employees were badly affected by the unfortunate event.
46 of the 300 employees of Casino Aztar had homes that were damaged by the tornado, 15 of those totally destroyed. And when things got rough, the casino didn't fold on its employees.
David Ledford, one of Casino Aztar's employees working as an engineer for nearly 10 years, lost almost everything to the wrath of nature. He was thankful that the institution he stood by, stood by him in return when he needed it.
"They got a team together of 10 or so people," said Ledford. "They helped me and my family for two days. But, they were not only helping me. They were going all over town."
"We were able to set up a fund for our employees to allow them to get cash and area housing," said Lisa McMahan, Casino Aztar's Marketing Manager.
Not only did they help their employees with the damages, they ensured that they still has work to go back to. Even as the casino had to close for a few days, Casino Aztar still paid their employees to help their fellow victims clean Caruthersville up.
The Casino's Expo Center that usually holds glitzy events is now doubling as a storage center for the Red Cross.
McMahan estimates that Casino Aztar has contributed an estimated $50,000 towards tornado relief in Caruthersville.
